Abstract This paper explores published information on types of workplace conflict and the styles of management to address the conflict. Articles discussing how the particular style used can affect stress in the workplace. Eight interviews were conducted in which subjects were asked to rate the amount of stress they experience, the type of conflict that is experienced, and their preferred method of conflict management. The data collected agrees with the published articles showing that the preferred method of dealing with conflict does have an effect on the amount of stress that is experienced by individuals in the workplace. Those favoring a compromising or collaborative approach experience the least amount of stress, while those†¦show more content†¦Literature Review Conflict and the Effects Conflict can be defined as a struggle between people with opposing needs, ideas, beliefs, values, or goals (Understanding Conflict and Conflict Management). When conflict occurs in the workplace, it can reduce moral, lower productivity, increase absenteeism, and can ultimately lead to serious or violent crimes (Gatlin, Wysocki, Kepner, 2002). Studies show that managers spend at least 25% of their time resolving workplace conflict (Gatlin, Wysocki, Kepner, 2002). Productivity of managers and employees are affected by the amount of conflict they experience on a day to day basis. How much people are affected by different conflicts can be dependent on their personal conflict style. Each individual personality will handle a given situation in a different way. Sources of Conflict The first step to addressing any conflict is defining what the actual conflict is. The range of a conflict can be something very minor to a large conflict that affects an entire department or the whole workplace. It is important to understand and be able to identify the different levels of conflict and how they may manifest in order to manage people (Workplaces that Work). Can money buy happiness? It’s a philosophical question that has been discussed for centuries and there is no simple answer. For example, Graham Hill in â€Å"Living with Less. A Lot Less† gives his input on this highly debated topic through a multitude of short anecdotes. She asked herself not if â€Å"Money can buy happiness,† but if money could â€Å"help buy happiness† (Rubin 293). She also brings up the idea of modest splurging and spending out as methods of using money to help one buy happiness. Rubin describes modest splurging as not being afraid of spending money upon activities or items if it brings one happiness (Rubin 295). Not spending out, on the other hand, is buying things, but then just never using them and saving the items for a better day (Rubin 305). Though Rubin addresses the use of money to help one buy happiness, I intend to complicate her argument to understand how constant subjection to the media’s influence causes our western society to view a materialistic life as a happy one. I’m especially thinking about the media’s message that our lives are not perfect, but that we can and should buy items which can make it perfect. Through the use of short anecdotes, Rubin is able to portray to his audience how the use of money can help one buy happiness. Does the violence occurring in media exhibit aggressive and violent behaviors in older children and adolescents? This is a big controversial issue that everyone debates on. However, many researchers have found that violence in television, video games, and media reveals that media violence increases likelihood of aggression and violent behaviors in adolescents. Although, negative experiences in families and peer groups have an important role in the development of violent behavior, children may develop that mentality to view the world full of conflicts and violence. Congresswoman Gloria M. Arroyo, in her given information, said that she was too concerned during her time in promoting how to save our dying environment and she even mentioned this in her talked to Asia Pacific Economic Council (APEC) convention. It is very ironic, while she’s demonstrating her concern to our environment, several mining businesses were allowed to operate during her time such as the ones being mentioned in the news that there was this kind of mining, such as selling the entire mountain in Surigao Del Norte and shipping it to other countries such as China and other neighboring countries. I am just astonished on how perfect she played her game, playing around the circle. Now tell me who’s talking? The mountain that cannot be replaced anymore. And who will be to blame? The calamities, one after another, that we are experiencing this days, are the products of the great master plan of the once greedy person. Yes she signed a large laws to codify the environment such as clean water, bio fuel†¦etc. nd yet what was the result of our natural gas, â€Å"THE MALAPAYA DEEP WATER GAS PROJECT IN PALAWAN† still we are spending dollars importing gases †¦tell me who’s talking†¦ She said that she created a program that could fight for the continuously increasing unemployed citizens in the country, jobless citizens, so we can over calm poverty, she managed to compare her program to the program of former president Estrada, who’s presidency lasted only for 2 yrs†¦definitely her program runs through many years, but does it give credit? Tell me who’s talking†¦. Talking about the education †¦ let me say, as I recall it right, she managed to get mad at Department of Education Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali, when the latter said to her on national television that the schools in our country need classrooms, teachers, etc. because they can no longer accommodate 70 to 100 students per class. Even Amorsolo can’t paint her aura, the news anchor that time fed in the advertisement at once so the viewer will not notice that scene. The report stated that, â€Å"For Filipinos, family is everything and the future of our children is sacred. That is why I invested so much time and effort in rejuvenating our education system. Despotism and Machavellian Theory Essay Despotism and Machiavellian Theory are similar ideologies in that both refer to forms of government where a sole ruler uses adequate and consequential power to deal with the governed body of people. In a despotism, though the ruler has unlimited power, he is not necessarily harsh or cruel to the people. Infact, he may be kindly and considerate and may even put the welfare of the people above his own wishes. But usually, despots do not feel bound by the preferences of their subjects, and they sometimes use force to maintain power. Likewise, Machiavelli viewed the state as an organism with its ruler as the head and its people as the body. He maintained that a healthy state is unified, orderly, and in balance, and that its people have happiness, honor, strength, and security. However, an unhealthy state is disorderly and unbalanced, and may require strong measures to restore it to normal. Machiavelli called for a leader to use any means necessary to preserve the state, resorting to crue lty, deception, and force, if nothing else worked.
